PIM / PCM ?
Product Information Management (PIM) or Product Content Management (PCM) systems do exactly what they say… They manage the information about products.
Think about some of these: article number, product name, EAN number, description, sizes and colours, price information, media, datasheets, manuals, availability etc.
Now multiply all the above with the countries and the languages your company is selling these to. That’s a lot to manage, isn’t it?
Most companies nowadays will already store essential product information in an ERP system. The rest is usually scattered over Excel files, departmental files, folders, databases, paper binders etc… Or are created by suppliers hired for marketing campaigns, printed catalogs, website design, translations and so on.
This scattered landscape of product information usually lingers for years and the consequences of the neglect do not become apparent until there are ideas about online commerce. A web application that manages products online will inevitably rely on accurate and complete information about the products.
SO WHAT IS PRODUCT INFORMATION MANAGEMENT?
Product information management is the centralizing all the above information to enable complete and accurate information to all the channels needing this information.
In reality, Product Information Management can be considered an extension of Master Data Management and Data Quality Management.
